Making an impact with a personal statement
A personal statement can be a crucial element of a student’s application, especially when applying to programmes with limited places. It is essential that a personal statement is included with all applications submitted to the University.
Personal statements should be unique to each student and prospective students should use the opportunity to introduce themselves to the University and to make an impact.
Personal statements should cover:
• Why the student wants to study the programme: students must demonstrate that they fully understand what the programme entails and why it is right for them. Students should ensure it is tailored to their chosen programme.
• Experience: relevant experience can help secure a place on many programmes. Meeting people in a related profession and observing practice can be of great benefit. Students should explain what they gained from their experience and how this relates to their chosen programme.
• Career plans: what are the student’s personal goals/career aspirations and how do they think the programme relates to them?
• Relevant skills: as well as their qualifications, what other interests, skills and qualities does the student have that make them right for the programme?
