Description
The colonization of the African continent did not happen overnight or in one defining event- Rather, the scramble for Africa occurred over decades between 1850 and 1900 and resulted in the gradual loss of the sovereignty of African states to European overrule- Historians who study the era of colonial conquest have explained the responses of African rulers to conquest as occurring on a spectrum with resistance at one end and collaboration on the other. In the first paragraph of your paper write a thesis that explains why African rulers were ultimately unsuccessful in their effort to resist colonial conquest- In the body of your paper focus on two specific cases of African strategies to illustrate your answer. Chose your examples from the following cases: the Asante of Kumasi, the Kingdom of Ethiopia under Menelik I and Haile Selassie, Mkwakwa of Hehe and the Maji Maji uprising of German East Africa, or the strategies of southern African chiefs Moeshoeshoe of the Basotho or Lobengula of the Ndebele- Rely on your reading of Chapter 13 and Chapter 14 in Africa in World History as well as supplemental readings from Africa and the West: A Documentary History Part I in a PDF under Assigned Readings on the course website- Do not use any other sources other than those specified here- Remember, you are not to collaborate with others on this assignment- Collaboration constitutes plagiarism and may result in a failing grade on this assignment or in the course!
