Critical Review and Reflection Essay
Reflect upon and review one set of ‘taken for granted’ historical facts – The Arrival of the First Fleet to Sydney
You will consider how certain forms of knowledge that have emerged as history, have been socially constructed and influenced by political, ethical, social and contextual factors.
Analyse how the historical ‘fact’ of the arrival of the first fleet to Sydney (and the teaching of this historical ‘fact’) has privileged or hidden diverse groups’ perspectives and viewpoints, drawing out the significance and influence of this upon existing pedagogical practices and understanding.
You then need to reflect upon the significance of education in teaching history and re-think implications for teaching historical concepts to children based on the K-10 history syllabus, with a focus on how implications can support children in being active and well-informed citizens. You are required to have a minimum of 8 references published from 2005 onwards that are of direct relevance to the topic in this essay; one which should be the NSW K-10 History syllabus (https://syllabus.bostes.nsw.edu.au/hsie/history-k10/).
