Read Richard Gilmore’s essay “The Dark Sublimity of Chinatown” in your text The Philosophy of Neo-Noir, in which he discusses the use and function of counternarratives in neo-noir films. Then watch Anthony Minghella’s 1999 neo-noir film The Talented Mr. Ripley, and write a 2-3 page Critical Essay (CE-4) in which you compare and contrast how Polanskis uses counternarratives in Chinatown to reinforce the inevitability of the traditional realist narrative, particularly the patriarchal hierarchical narrative of Noah Cross, while Minghella uses counternarratives to “disrupt, dislodge, and even subvert” the inevitability of the outcome of the film’s traditional realist main narrative in The Talented Mr. Ripley. do not use references.
