Order Description
Explain the hereditary diseases. Describe and analyze at least 2 examples of maternal inheritance (mitochondrial) Example only to this decease type of genetic diseases. You must also discuss and analyze the role of the Nurse Practitioner, with a strong focus on assessing and recognizing genetic and environmental factors influencing incidence of disease in populations.
Almost all diseases have a genetic component, but the importance of this component varies. The disorders in which genes play an important role (genetic diseases) can be categorized as:
(a) Single gene defects.
(b) Chromosomal disorders.
(c) Multifactorial.
A single gene disorder also called Mendelian disorder is caused by a defect in a particular gene. The single gene disorders are rare, but given that there are about 18,000 known single gene disorders, their combined impact is significant. The single gene disorders are characterized by how they are passed down in families. There are five basic patterns of monogenetic inheritance:
(a) Autosomal dominant.
(b) Autosomal recessive.
(c) Linked dominant chromosome X.
(d) X-linked recessive.
(e) Maternal inheritance (mitochondrial).
