Urban Studies
Read Parts 1-3 (Chapters 1-15) of the highly influential book "The Death and Life of Great American Cities" by Jane Jacobs. As you read each chapter, take note of Jacobs’ criticisms of US cities and urban planning in 1961 (when the book was published), and her arguments regarding cities with “life”.
Next, you are to craft a well-written essay that clearly addresses the following components:
? Identify the key arguments presented by Jacobs in Parts 1 through 3 of the book (a minimum of three
arguments per section for a total of roughly nine arguments should be discussed in your essay)
? Describe a specific example Jacobs uses in her book to illustrate each of these arguments (one example
minimum for each of the arguments you discuss)
? Critique how well each of these argument holds true in US cities and the urban planning profession
today, given the changes that have taken place in cities and US society since 1961.
