Book Review/Critique
Students will submit a Book Review written in 3rd person for the James Macgregor Burns Leadership text. The book review/critique needs to briefly identify the major concepts and principles from the book and articulate the implication(s) for leaders. Students should also provide an evaluation on how the reading supports or contradicts a proper philosophy of leadership. The following needs to be include in the book review/critique:
Introduction
Summary of Contents of the Book – Thorough but succinct summaries of major concepts and key arguments of the book. What is the book about? What are its main ideas? What are the supporting arguments for the main ideas? Do not quote from the book (1-1.5 pages)
Critical Evaluation – Analysis of the key arguments and discussions of relevance to the study of leadership. How do the author’s ideas compare to other leadership theories and ideology? What is the significance of the author’s ideas, and why are they important or not important? Why is this book important for leaders? What contribution does the book make to leadership theory in general? (2-3 pages)
Leadership Application – Discussion of relevance of leadership principles to the leadership context. In what ways does this book apply to leadership and the ability to lead? How can these principles be applied in a leadership context? Student can use current or past contexts as a reference, but remember to write in 3rd person (2 pages)
