Review the reservations, declarations, and understandings (RUDs) made by the United States upon its ratification of the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (CCPR) (pp. 123-126 of the textbook). Are these RUDs, individually or taken as a whole, compatible with the “object and purpose” of the CCPR? If any of them is incompatible, explain in specific terms why this is so. In general, do you believe that it is wise to permit reservations to human rights treaties, or should such reservations be prohibited?
