Turn in: at the beginning of class (papers sent over emails will not be accepted, see
grading contract)
In the movie “Instinct” there are many scenes that relate to several current scientific topics
(sustainability, business, and the environment). However, you should only focus on the
leadership concepts that we covered in this course. This assignment is asking you to focus on
three major aspects (topics) of the movie. Explain and comment according to the guideline and
relate to specific scenes in each of the three parts of the assignment. If you write more than 2
pages you will lose points. If you focus only on these “letters” and you get right to the point, you
will be able to cover everything in two pages (there is no need for an introduction nor
conclusion; start your essay by covering letter part 1 and letter “a”: follow the format)
Be careful! For each letter, in each of the three parts, you must reference a specific scene with
precise details; otherwise, this assignment does not make any sense. If you don’t relate to the
movie in this way for each question in each letter, you will lose 50% of the points available per
letter. If you just describe in a general way what the characters do along the movies (they did
this, then that, etc.) without providing specific scenes where it is shown the concept that you
are writing about, then you will lose points. Please, don’t mention the minute and seconds
where the scene happens, it is not the point. On one hand, if you only define the concepts
without using scenes, this assignment would be only an exercise in memorization – which is
not helpful. On the other hand, scenes, without definitions/explanations, don’t explain much
because it does not reflect your full understanding of the concepts. This is why you need both
definitions/explanations and scenes (follow examples provided by me in class). Be aware that
these two criteria don’t have anything to do with formatting, they represent the content of the
assignment. If you miss one of these two criteria, you will be missing points in content and I
won’t be able to give you a good grade.
1) Dr. Powel (Anthony Hopkins) and Dr. Cudler (Cuba Gooding Jr.) begin their relationship at
the beginning of the movie and finish it at the end of the movie. A) Who is the leader? Who is
the follower? Please, explain why. B) Write about the leadership development process that
happens in between by using one of the leadership theories studied in class. C) Comment on the
lessons that the follower learns from the leader at the end of process (movie). (5 points: a-1.5, b-1.5, c-2), (3 scenes total).
2) A major topic of the movie is “control”. Write about it. A) How does control relate to human
behavior and leadership in the movie? B) What lessons does the follower (Dr. Cudler) learn
about control? C) What is the connection between control and emotions? Comment on the
increase in E.I of the follower throughout the story. (5 points: a-1.5, b-1.5, c-2), (3 scenes total).

3) There are some clear examples of how different characters in the movie use different type of
power. Write about each of the five types by describing a scene and explain how each scene is a
good example of that power. A) legitimate, B) coercive, C) reward, D) expert, and E) referent.)
(5 points: 1 point per letter), (5 scenes total).
Every point will be given in terms of how clear, specific, relevant, and elaborated your answers
are. Each point is also based on how carefully you follow directions (quantity) and on how good
(quality) the scenes that you select are (and also how well you explain them to support your
points)
