SOWK 666 – Family Dynamics of Domestic Violence
The semester will consist of three (3) papers. The three papers will provide students with more
in-depth knowledge and broaden their knowledge of domestic violence.
Assignment 1 (15% of overall grade): This topic will be: Ellen Pence and what are her contributions to
the domestic violence movement? Along with one page on one of the following people listed below who
have contributed to ending violence against women:
Lenore Walker Angela Davis

Former Vice President/former U.S. Senator Joe Biden Tillie Black Bear

The paper will be 6-8 pages in length. Paper length does not include cover page or references; and must
be a full 6 pages in length (minimum). There must be a minimum of 5 pages on Ellen Pence and then
at least one additional page on the other person you select.
1 inch margins (top, bottom and sides)
Double-spaced and typed in Times Roman
Minimum of five (5) citations/references with the vast majority being from accredited books and journals
and any supplements from the Internet must be from recognized, reputable organizations. Websites such
as Wikipedia are NOT acceptable.

Topic: what is the impact of domestic violence on health and mental health; students can take
the impact on the adult victim, abuser OR children.
Due: Unit 8
Format for Assignment 2:
Papers will be 8-10 pages in length. Page length does not include cover page or references. And
this also means complete pages – not 7 ½ pages but a full 8 pages minimum.

Typed in 12 point type and in Times Roman
Double-spaced

Topic: Student choice; any topic on domestic violence the student chooses. Students may do
research/evidence-based research (such as teen dating violence) or topic centered (such as how
fairy tales objectify women).

Topic: Student Choice
The final paper should focus on one of the topics covered by the course and concentrate on the
background of the issue and what we know of the issue thus far.
This will include:
Introduction
Describe of the problem
Describe the population it affects
Explain why this issue is important to improve the system or the program(s)
Provide recommendations for improvement
Critical analysis is evident in the analysis of the problem, history of addressing it,
recommendations and ethical concerns drawing upon class knowledge and theories.
Literature is used appropriately across the assignment to support critical thinking in
making recommendations and/or designing/re-designing programs drawing upon
scholarly sources of literature.
The final paper can be evidence-based research which will re-design or design an
intervention program (such as teen dating violence) or recommendation for improving
existing programs OR a topic-centered paper along with recommendations to improve

the system (e.g., the laws of China compared to the laws of the US or How Fairy Tales
Objectify Women).
If doing a topic-centered paper, you should want to consult with the instructor regarding the
topic.
The final paper may take existing programs and re-design them in a fashion that would improve
the outcomes and/or recommendations for improvements.

Writing, Editing, and APA format: The written proposal should cite a minimum of 15
scholarly sources, and be 10 – 15 pages in length (APA format, double-spaced, excluding
reference, title page and appendix) and will be evaluated on meeting all content requirements as
outlined in the assignment handout, use of critical thinking, drawing upon literature and
knowledge, and Quality, including correct, and effective use of writing skills and format see
checklist below).
WRITING QUALITY AND APA FORMAT:

Sources on the reference list are not cited in the paper
Sources appear to need an indirect or secondary citation (citing from a source that you are not directly using)
Include only the author(s)’s last name and year date in the citation
Use the “&” symbol between authors’ last names when citing between parentheses
Use quotation marks and page numbers (or paragraph numbers for sources with no page nos.) for quotations
Use of “et al.” is not correct
The APA reference format:
Information is missing in the references, such as the journal title, volume, issue or page numbers.
Use the authors’ last names, and initials for first and middle names; use the “&” symbol between the next to
last and last authors’ names.
Article and book titles only use capital letters in the first word, the first word after a colon, and in proper
names; Journal titles use capitals in the title
Use only the year of publication in the date, unless is it a weekly or monthly media article
Italicize the journal or book title
Electronic retrieval info not correct; include the “DOI” number when available
The title of the reference pages needs to be centered and only say References (no bold)
Indent the lines AFTER the first line of each reference; double-space all references
