Essay Topic
A famous line in Hamlet is, “To thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man” (1.3.1). Which of the characters in Hamlet are true to themselves? Does that prevent them from being false to one another? Does the meaning of this quote change for you when you consider that it’s spoken by Polonius, one of the plays most frequently mocked characters?
