Course Learning Objectives:
- Describe karyotyping, pedigrees, and biotechnology and provide an example of the uses of each.
Chapter 8-9 Objectives:
1.Explain how family pedigrees can help determine the inheritance of many human traits.
2. Explain how and why karyotyping is performed.
Directions: In this assignment, you will answer the following questions here on this document please be as descriptive as possible:
*Note: At the end of the assignment make sure to cite any sources that were used and make sure that you describe everything in your own words. Failure to do so or copying directly from the source will result in an automatic zero due to plagiarism!!!
- How do family pedigrees help determine the inheritance of many human traits (20 pts)?
A pedigree is a biological chart that is used to determine the genetic flow or even character traits of a family. It is used to identify and recognize any features that might be genetic within the family members. Doctors use the pedigree to determine any problems that families may have and any diseases or disorders that are likely to be seen with the future offspring. They also give a precise quotation of any hereditary diseases that may be tough for an individual.
- What is karyotyping and why is it performed (20 pts)?
The definition of karyotype from the medical sector is used to describe a picture taken on the view of chromosomes. They are taken from the skin cells and the blood cells, and they help ensure that the body of a human being has a good number of chromosomes. It also helps in ensuring that those patients with suspected Down syndrome condition are looked at and reviewed. Down syndrome and other diseases are related to the number of chromosomes being more or less are observed through a karyotype. Therefore, this can be viewed as a good example of a karyotype test, and most patients will argue that it is a simple blood test by the doctor.
- How does biotechnology play a role in the inheritance of many human traits (20 pts)?
Biotechnology means, altering or even improving individual processes within the biological scope to fit particular purposes and make sure that they are useful. In companies, some processes may be altered by the manufacturers to support certain genetic mutations of plants and other living things. The hospitals are also known to identify genetic traits through biotechnology and adjust where there need significant. An example of the use of biotechnology is when a company takes part in the creation of specific plants or even the intersecting and joining of certain plants or substances to bring about a hybrid.
- Below is an image of a karyotype. Which chromosome number contains the abnormality (5 pts)?
Chromosome 18
- Which disorder is depicted by the karyotype (5 pts)?
Edward’s syndrome or also is called Trisomy 18
- Give a brief (a page minimum) description of what is the disorder, the symptoms, and any treatments/research currently being done regarding this disorder (30 pts).
