Lab Report Format
Please read the following lab report formatting rubric. It will be used for grading your lab reports. If you miss
any of the following points, marks for that point will be counted as zero.
1. Cover Page:
• QU Logo, University, College, Department, Semester, Course code & name, Laboratory Sections (B01,
B51, etc.), experiment title, lab group #, student names & IDs, Instructor/T.A name, submission date
2. Introduction
• If the introduction is given in the handout, copying it as it is will be given half the marks.
• If not, you should write an introduction that includes general and specific information related to the
experiment and topics that are covered in the lab.
• Make sure you give your references for all sources used to get full marks
3. Theory: Includes the main concepts and relations/equations/ free-body diagrams of the experiment as well
as figures to illustrate them
4. Lab Objectives: Briefly state the objective of the experiment
5. Materials/Equipment: List all materials & Equipment used and include pictures taken
6. Experimental Procedure:
• Write the experimental procedure for what you did during the lab
• Make sure your procedure is in passive voice and past tense
• Procedure copied as it is from lab sheet will be given half the marks
• Support your procedure with photos of experimental methodology
7. Lab Assignment Questions:
• Answer all questions asked in the Lab
8. Observations and Results:
• Write what you have observed during the experiment that might add value to the report
• Required plots, tables, and calculations are properly presented in this section
• Extra analysis might be added to support your conclusionsPage 2 of 2
9. Discussion: Discuss all your results (Tables, plots, calculations and findings) in this section
10. Conclusions:
• Write what you have learnt from the experiment and difficulties if any
• Conclusions logically follow from arguments presented in the discussion
• Conclusions are supported by the results
• Conclusions satisfy the objectives stated in the introduction
11. References:
• Textbook: author, book title, publisher and date
• Website: name, website link, date accessed
• Also references should be included inside the text as (in-text citation)
12. Overall the report should be:
• Typed, Focused, concise, to-the-point
• Pages should be numbered
• Neat and well organized, with the same font type throughout
• Spell Checked and Units for numbers shouldn’t be missing
• Graphics/tables must be clear and readable and have captions (For example, “Figure #” or “Table #”) and
they must be described, discussed and explained in the text.
• Showing the Individual Contribution (Each student in the group should write his contribution towards the
experiment and the report as well)
• Turned in hard copy form to the Lab instructor, or in the Lab instructor’s mailbox. On the same day, a
soft copy must be submitted on Blackboard as well
Notes about grading:
1. If a student misses the experiment, the lab grade will be counted as zero even if he contributed in the report.
2. The marks distribution for the lab report might vary depending on the requirements of the experiment and the
level of the students, so it is highly recommended to do all the items of this document to avoid losing grades.
3. The reports will be graded based on technical accuracy, presentation style and quality, and completeness. Note
that neatness, grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. will be considered.
4. 10% of the report final grade will be deducted per day for late reports.
5. Reports are not accepted through email.
