Asian Literature Assignment
Please upload your three page interpretation of this week’s reading. Week 14 – 3 Page Assignment – Interpretation of Texts For this week’s assignment, write a total of 3 full length pages that address each of the works assigned for the week, as well as each of the bulleted questions below: Okuizumi •What role does war play in this novel? •Why is the structure of the novel so unreliable? For instance, the reader never finds out exactly what happened to Manase in the war – why? •What does the captain represent to Manase? What about the lance corporeal? Is Manase haunted or guilt-ridden by these figures? •What’s the symbolism of the stones/geology in the book? Is it his unconscious trying to remind him of something with the war? •How does Manase cope with civilian life? Is he a good husband? Father? Is this important to the meaning of the book? •What’s the importance of the scene where he finds himself strangling his wife? •It’s suspicious how his son died in the cave; some critics say it is so similar to his war experience that the author wants readers to believe he murdered his son. What do you think? What in the book supports this? •Some critics also say that Manase killed the lance corporeal in the war, and this explains the odd format of the book’s narrative – that Manase has been struggling with guilt because of this. Do you agree? What would support this? •The end of the book is quite mystical; why does it end this way? Does is resolve something in Manase? * If you had to argue that Manase experienced the hero’s journey (remember this was discussed in the HERO lecture in week 1); how would you make this argument?
