Job shadowing Reflection
1. Description(100)
– What/where happened, what was the experience, role, what did others do and what did you do, purpose
– You can make a scenario for “job shadowing”
e.g.
This POD activity took place in a small car dealership called ‘Dublin City Motors’ in Dundrum, Dublin. I shadowed the company owner for an entire day of work from 9-5 and, got an insight of what it is like to own a business and run it, going into detail about each aspect of the business. The experience was very practical and is beneficial to me and my career and personal development.
2. Self Analysis(200 words)
– Question the assumptions, incorporate alternative perspectives, establish opinions, Incorporate relevant claims / evidence / examples, multiple sources (4+), reliability of evidence and what makes it reliable
3. Analysis of learning(300)
– Demonstrate greater sophistication in understanding (What did you learn, and what can you draw from the experience) via critical analysis of current academic literature .
– ex: “From this lecture I learned…” ”The speaker highlighted 5 areas that are essential to..”
– literature to derive understanding
– ex: “this implies that diversity increases chances of success by 75%”
– Write critically !
4. Application in context(200 words)
– Deep vs surface learning (Application of the activity in your context) (Your deep learning angle from the POD activity)
– (I) How does POD learnings link to your previous knowledge, experience, learning and/or assumptions (II) and how does it help you understand them (or not)
This linkage must be articulated clearly such that it explains:
1. how and why you think there is a link
2. The importance of the link
3. Show in writing that you understand the relationships you perceive to exist – it can’t be implied or superficially done, it must be articulated in detail. e.g: negotiation skills are important for managers to be successful
4. Show reflection in current context too (In relation to litt/studies). e.g: “Reading the case studies has helped me realize the importance of career planning at all stages of my career” – anything that relates to you and your career choice, use it!
5. Evaluation(250-300 words)
Critically Evaluate/Discuss/Debate the deep learning topic
• 2nd Part of Reflection (should be longest section in reflection)
• Evaluation of that bit that is of genuine interest or importance to you or to your understanding in that area
– 1. Do you agree/disagree with the POD learning(s) on that deep learning topic and
why? Back up with critical analysis. (Note: You’re not criticising the POD(speaker) or the list
of learnings from the POD (speaker) – only that deep learning part relevant to you)
OR
– 2. What would you like to learn or evaluate about deep area to benefit you?
• Is there an angle that you like to take/explore?, Examples
• Deep Learning: Presentation nerves. Angle could be explore how to get over presentation nerves
• Deep Learning: Entrepreneurs can’t be lazy – Angle: You explore how hard entrepreneurs work
• Towards end of evaluation section – Ask yourself: How does it test or require you to re-interpret or re-consider what you already knew/previously did know?
6. Reconstruct Self-Concept (100 words)
– What changes can you make?
– What changes will you make or what has changed?
– What will you do differently or will do differently as a consequence of this event?
“My experience showed me that the best way to learn is to participate and actually try to perform not merely observing. Hopefully this is something I can incorporate into my future studies.”
7. Action or Application(100 words)
– What are your plans or future actions to apply this new learning(s)?
– Give an example of how you understand this new learning (seen other practice more etc)
