“Rule of Life”
This assignment will help you put the course together for yourself in such a way as to provide structure and discipline for the future. It is a summary of what you have learned in this course and a plan for how you intend to continue in spiritual practices after this class is over. It consists of two parts:
Part One: Personal Overview of particular Habits (from Earley) and related Practices. Choose a minimum of two of the Daily or Weekly Habits from The Common Rule to base your overview on and separate out each habit as its own subsection in your paper. In each subsection: 1) write about the Habit and if you have tried it and how you believe such a habit may help you in the future. 2) Then, in the same subsection, relate how this Habit would enhance specific spiritual Practices we have talked about in class or have chapters devoted to them in Soul Feast. Describe your understanding of what the practices are using Soul Feast and class notes as the basis for your description. Include description of how you have used any of these Practices in your own life. I would expect each student to devote a minimum of one page to each subsection.
Part 2 : Write your own proposed plan for Developing a “Rule of Life”. This part need not be long and should be realistic. Within your plan include possible outcomes in spiritual virtues. See pages 152-153 in Soul Feast. for examples. Part 2, the actual Rule of Life, should be about one page. Total Length: 3-5 pages.
Provide in-text citations if you refer to a particular portion of Soul Feast or Common Rule. Provide any Biblical citations if you quote the Bible.
