This assignment was previously a video that highlights each component of a Direct/Explicit Instruction model. However, with the COVID-19 situation, we are asked to limit contacts with friends/relatives / students.
Therefore, for this assignment, you are asked to:
Part I: Submit a Paper
Instructions
Step 1: Choose a reading skill that research shows are important to support students with reading disabilities (refer to readings assigned during the 3 weeks allocated to reading disabilities in the course). Examples of a possible reading skill include the following:
Preschool-Grade 1 How to hear spoken sounds in consonant-vowel-consonant words (<link is hidden> cat, big, man).
Grade 2- 3 How to read multisyllabic words by first, breaking spoken words into spoken syllables.
Grade 3 How to use a graphic organizer to organize thinking about the meaning of a short passage (of your choice).
Step 2: Plan a direct instruction lesson to teach the reading skill you have chosen. Follow the Direct Instruction principles outlined in the readings and from the YouTube videos in Week 11.
Step 3: The lesson should have main 5 parts:
provide a purpose to the student for learning the skill (<link is hidden> why should one have to learn this skill?)
model the skill for the student (<link is hidden> using think aloud procedures where you talk aloud about what you are doing while you model the skill).
scaffold the student’s learning as the student tries to do the skill (<link is hidden> work together on the skill)
allow the student to practice the skill on his/her own.
assess whether the student has learned the skill by asking the student to use the skill on new words or with new text.
Then, write the full SCRIPT of your teaching lesson (= what you would say to your student) – by highlighting the Direct Instruction principles – the 5 parts – and explaining why these components are necessary. Make sure you cover all the criteria.
Your paper should be no more than 4-5 pages long, double-spaced.
Your paper should be done like a script – mentioning the lines you would normally say to your student – In addition of the rationale – explaining why the components are necessary.
