The focus of this assignment is on culture and its implications for workforce planning, and change management. We have discussed culture change as one aspect that can be a component in strategic workforce planning. We also saw both the desire and need for a change in culture in the Microsoft case study. Culture can be a big driver in an organization’s workforce supply and demand affecting their ability to recruit, retain and engage talent. It also impacts how the organization views developing and mentoring associates. Which can either positively or negatively affect how well the organization can deliver on their strategy.
In this assignment wear two hats, one as a senior leader of the organization and one as an HR professional. As we saw have discussed and continued to see, the more closely aligned the business and HR are, the more successful workforce planning initiatives will be.
In your team identify the drivers and key aspects of the organization’s current culture (please feel free to make some assumptions here). Also, do an external scan of the environment that the company is operating in – who are their key competitors, are their economic or customer trends that are affecting the company etc.?
Part of this assignment is to use online collaboration tools such as google docs, Skype, zoom etc., so you are not required to meet in person. As we have discussed in class more and more companies have associates working remotely and being able to work/communicate with people in various locations will in many cases continue to be part of our working lives. This is a chance to experiment with how well these tools work.
Be prepared to share the following with the class in a 20-minute presentation in our next synchronous class on December 13th:
- An overview:
- General information about the company – key products, strategy, customers, etc.
- Why you chose it – what made it interesting?
- What are key external/environmental trends and factors that the company is being affected by?
- Describe the company culture.
- Key elements – positive and/or negative
- Feel free to make some assumptions here, as you will need to infer some of this from your reading
- How is the current culture either helping or hindering their ability to effectively execute a workforce plan, what elements of the workforce plan is the culture potentially impacting?
- For example:
- Supply and demand
- Is it driving retention and loyalty or high turnover?
- Is it impacting their external brand, or their internal brand.
- Is it a match for their current external realities?
- What are the strengths and weaknesses?
- Where are their opportunities?
- For example:
- What elements of the culture would you change or build upon and why?
- What would your team’s change management plan be to effectively implement your team’s recommendations?
- What would the impact of these changes be on the organizations ability to better create and execute their workforce plan?
- Any other items/information you think are important and that the class should know.
As you work in your teams, be inclusive and ensure everyone can contribute. Several people from the team should present to the class.
There is no paper required for the assignment, however, if you would like you can provide the class with background material prior to class. There is not standard format for the presentations so have fun with this.
