SUMMER 2017
Reading Response Guidelines
Throughout the course of this class, you are expected to submit two written responses to course readings. The purposes of these responses is for you to summarize issues presented in the readings, as well as connect these ideas with actual examples of children’s art, or art of your own creation. The responses must be submitted by the due date posted on the course calendar. For the reading response one, you should choose one reading assigned between 6/8 and 6/16. You should also choose another reading assigned between 6/19 and 6/29 for your response 2 (See the course calendar). Please familiarize yourself with the course calendar. No make-up responses will be accepted. Preparation for these activities includes thoughtfully reading and reflecting.
All responses must be uploaded to the appropriate d2l dropbox prior to due dates outlined in the course calendar. Responses should be saved in .doc or .docx format only. Responses not submitted in this format will not be assessed, and will be subject to the late work policy. Responses submitted after the deadlines are subject to the late-work policy. Responses should stand on their own as concise, complete, and thoughtful pieces of academic writing. In total, the reading responses are 80 points in total (40 points each).
Details:
Each response should contain all of the information described below:
• An introductory paragraph devoted to summarizing the reading. You should identify the article (by full title) and author (by either full or last name – not first!), and discuss the general goal of the article (i.e.: the main point). Do not repeat what the author has said, but rather try to convey their main point in your own words. For example, if you were to tell a friend what this article is about in one or two sentences, what would you say? Then, briefly mention the most important ideas from the article (i.e.: sub topics) that you think help back up the author’s main idea.
• A visual image that in some way relates to the core content of the reading. The image can be an example of child art taken from one of the children’s art websites on d2l, or it can be an image of your own creation/design. Please do note if you created the image yourself, or cite the source/website that the image came from. If you created the image yourself, it should be clear that you put the time and effort into your art making experience.
• A paragraph describing how your included image relates to the reading. Why did you either select that particular image, or create it yourself? Is there a particular part of the article that your image reference? Does your image reinforce ideas presented in the reading? Or perhaps negate those ideas?
• If you wish, you may briefly include your own reaction/ideas about the reading. This is not necessary, but if you wish to flesh out your own ideas, it is a good place to do so. Do make sure that you focus on the main details listed above before you move on to your own thoughts.
