Task:
Consider the following from Hewison et al (2010).
‘Effective leadership is the ability to marry rhetorical power with practical innovations so as to create a sustainable, resilient, well-networked organisation capable of growing its own capacity to act, and providing high-quality results for its customers, staff and funders’.
You are encouraged to discuss your thoughts on the relevance, accuracy and appropriateness of Hewison et al’s (2010) notion of effective leadership and the ways in which it aligns and does not align with your chosen case study.
Requirements:
• Select an arts or cultural organisation upon which to base your case study.
• Collect data from secondary sources (journals, newspaper articles, and websites). You may also base your discussion on interviews with key management and/or members of the board. All sources, including any interviews, must be cited using the Harvard referencing style.
You must set out your case study as outlined below:
1. Contextual Overview
a. Discuss the notion and definition of leadership from a range of authors.
b. Analyse the importance of leadership in the cultural sector.
2. Case Study Analysis
a. Develop an analysis of how the organisation you have selected provides leadership both internally (within the organisation) and externally (within the sector).
b. Analyse the differences between the leadership provided by: Chair of the Board, CEO or Artistic Director, and the General Manager.
c. Assess the effectiveness of the key roles in relation to each other and in the provision of leadership for the organisation.
3. Conclusion/Recommendations
• Based on your analysis, what recommendations do you make for the future leadership role of the organisation you have studied?
