Write a response to the chosen case study outlining your theories about the child’s presentation and where you might go next in terms of assessment and/or initial suggestions for intervention. Your response should take an evidence-based approach. That is, you should refer to the research literature in your formulation. The tutorial will provide you with much more information about how this will work.
There is not a right or wrong answer for each case study. You are being given an initial presentation, and should show that you are able to think carefully about the child’s description and situation, using the research evidence-base to guide your thinking.
Your response should be no more than 1500 words long (excluding references). Please provide a full reference list in APA style at the end of your response.
Case Study:
Ami
Ami is ten and recently moved to her primary school from another country. When she arrived, Ami’s English was not terribly good, but she learned quickly and six months later, has few difficulties understanding classroom activities. Ami’s teachers are pleased with her academic progress. In particular, Ami seems to be quite adept at maths. However, Ami’s class teacher is concerned that she seems to have a very limited social circle, and often seems rather ’flat’.
Ami’s parents do not speak very good English, and her teachers are not clear whether they really understand that Ami is struggling to make friends. Ami also has a younger brother, and she often seems to take on a caring role for the younger child. He is not yet of school age, but attends the pre-school attached to the school for fifteen hours per week. Both children come to school on time, and seem to be adequately dressed.
Although there have been no real incidences of arguments or other falling out between Ami and the other pupils in her class, her teachers are concerned that she is left out of activities, and does not seem to be invited to parties. She does not do any after-school activities, and seems to avoid playground games at break times. There was one reported occasion where a midday assistant had words with some girls who were mimicking Ami’s accent, but Ami has not reported any further incidences like this. Ami’s teachers are concerned that when she goes to Secondary school, this social exclusion might not be so obvious to the staff, and so may not be resolved.
