Components of Population Growth
Assume a region has a total population of 16,081,000. There were 421,200 births, 126,600 deaths, 156,600 immigrants, and 37,000 emigrants over the previous year.
What are the values for the components of growth?
Birth Rate (expressed per thousand):
There are 16,081 thousand people, so there are 421,200/16,081 = 26.19 births per thousand people.
Death Rate (expressed per thousand):
There are 16,081 thousand people, so there are 126,600/16,081 = 7.87 deaths per thousand people.
Rate of Natural Increase (expressed as percent):
The difference between birth and death rates is 26.19 – 7.87 = 18.32, but this is still expressed per thousand. To convert to percent, divide by 10, so the annual rate of natural increase is 1.832%.
Immigration Rate (expressed as percent):
There were 156,600 immigrants, so the immigration rate is (156,600/16,081,000) x 100 = 0.97%.
Emigration Rate (expressed as percent):
There were 37,000 emigrants, so emigration rate is (37,000/16,081,000) x 100 = 0.23%.
Rate of Net Migration (expressed as percent):
This is the difference between the rate of immigration and the rate of emigration, so 0.97 – 0.23 = 0.74%.
Sample Population Pyramids
Population pyramids are calculated by dividing the gender population in the specific age group by the total overall population of the province/territory.
