CULTURAL OBSTACLES EXERCISE
Objective: Describe cultural obstacles to reading and understanding the Old Testament.
Instructions
There are definitely cultural issues to consider when reading the Old Testament. Things like being family oriented, male-dominated, tradition focused, esteeming the elderly, and living in a God-centered world could seem to us in the Western world quite foreign, which they are. However, rather than dismissing the text due to so many differences, it’s helpful to know the context that we are dealing with, read the text for what it is, and apply the message to our lives.
⎯ Read Chapter 3 of your Lennox textbook.
⎯ Create a table with two columns.
⎯ In the first column, provide cultural obstacles listed in the reading. One obstacle per row in the column.
⎯ In the second column, provide a very brief response of why the item identified is an obstacle to today’s Western reader.
⎯ However, citations should be presented in APA format and a reference list should be included as a separate page at the end of the exercise.
