Imaginary Emergency Situation
You will write an essay paper which includes all the requested information as noted below. Your paper must be two to three pages in length and must utilize appropriate grammar and spelling. Follow the “Writing Guidelines for Health & PE Classes” handout when formatting your paper. Citations must be used if using resources; citations must be in APA style. Points will be deducted from the total score for errors in grammar, spelling, formatting, and organization.
Your assignment is to create an imaginary emergency situation (injury or illness) which you could encounter. The emergency must include one patient (you cannot use yourself as the patient). It should be a situation in which you would call 9-1-1 for assistance. The patient must not have an airway obstruction or be in need of CPR.
With words, provide a detailed description of the scene so that your instructor is able to have a clear understanding of that scene. Include the following:
Location of the emergency (described in detail)
Possible hazards at the scene (but you are still able to assist the patient)
Position/location of the patient
How you initially addressed the victim (Identify yourself as a certified first aid
provider and ask for permission to assist the patient.)
Discuss any personal protective equipment utilized
First impression of the condition of the patient
Explain what you find when you approach your patient and perform an assessment. If the victim in your scenario is not responsive, it is still important for you to address the findings of the SAMPLE history.
Identify chief complaint
Findings from primary survey (responsiveness, breathing, bleeding)
SAMPLE history findings
Vitals (pulse, respirations, skin; include quantity and quality as appropriate)
Findings from secondary check (head-to-toe exam when necessary)
Explain what first aid you did for your patient. Use enough detail to explain what you did.
Explain your 9-1-1 phone call.
At what point in the assessment process did you call?
Details that you shared with the dispatcher.
Did you need to call back to update the dispatcher about the patient’s
condition? Why? Why not?
When the EMS unit arrived, what information did you share with the EMT? Details of your “handoff” report
The essay paper must be printed, stapled together, and turned in no later than the due date noted in the class schedule. Your instructor may also ask you to place a copy of your paper in a drop box on Blackboard. Failure to place the paper in the Blackboard drop box and submit it through SafeAssign could result in a grade of zero for the paper.
