Job a) Cell Biology
You will work as a Technician in the Cell Biology Technical Team and provide routine services within the
Laboratories and Workshops. This is a term time only (35 hours per week, mornings Monday – Friday),
permanent role. You may be required to work an evening during term time to cover classes, as well as the
occasional Saturday for special events and/or open days, for which time off in lieu will be given.

You must be able to:
Work as a member of the technical team applying knowledge and skills in a particular area to set out
equipment and prepare laboratory/workshop materials to be used by others
Work flexibly, providing support and assistance to different workshops/ laboratories/studios/ field
environments and teams as appropriate
Support learning, teaching, research and enterprise activities, as a member of the technical team.
Key Tasks Service Delivery
You will be able to:
operate workshop/ lab equipment, after training.
prepare equipment/samples according to job requests and standard operating procedures to ensure that
work can take place on time e.g. preparation of accurate chemical solutions and buffers, use and maintain
microscopes, balances, pH meters, spectrophotometers, automatic pipettes, centrifuges, dishwasher, fume
cupboards, laminar flow and microbiological cabinets (Class II cabinets)
check and maintain consumable stock levels
complete routine laboratory cleaning and check of eye wash stations
respond to routine requests for information and assistance from colleagues and service users, referring
them to others as required
show individual service users how to use standard lab/workshop equipment
set up and conduct simple procedures, using standard techniques to gather data for others
complete standard forms and records accurately and to provide written information to be used by others
(accurate record keeping of daily task)
monitor resource usage, assist with the organisation of stores, requisitioning and movement of
equipment and materials with the technical team (management skills to check resources)
read, understand and adhere to risk assessments relevant to the area and to recognise and highlight the
need for risk assessment (talk about risk assessment)
check equipment is fit for purpose, undertaking basic routine maintenance and simple repairs, and
recognising and reporting defects to the relevant person in order to maintain safety and customer
satisfaction (Do you have organisation skills?)
recognise and report any hazards or emergencies in the lab/workshop area
promote good health and safety practice and maintain a good standard of housekeeping (during lab
sessions I had observed health and safety precaution by wearing gloves and protective glasses to protect
myself) I am aware of the regulation of COSH.
participate as a member of the technical team, advising and guiding new starters working in the same
role or team on standard information and procedures and covering the work of others in the same role or in
the role of Assistant Technician as required (mentorship is my strong point when working a team by
supporting fellow members of the team to get the job done) I had demonstrated that during lab session by
helping fellow student use equipment)
work in a flexible manner, undertaking duties in other service areas as required (explain about flexible you

contribute to building team morale and to be proactive in providing support and assistance ( will you be

participate in team meetings and departmental communication sessions and to make suggestions to
