Reflecting back on your experience with the refugee design thinking challenge, please answer the following questions.
- First of all, draw a visual representation of design thinking as you understand it. Please do not copy. I want to see what you understand about design thinking.
- Please provide a brief description of your design challenge.
- Please write a brief description of your prototype. What specific problem were you trying to solve with your prototype. Attach/insert a picture of your prototype to your submitted document.
- What was your biggest struggle during the design challenge?
- What was your biggest surprise?
- What key things have you learned about design thinking and about yourself from this design challenge?
- What would you do differently if you were asked to do this challenge again?
Refugees Design thinking challenge
- Design thinking challenge is to think out of box. In other words, you should come up with creative and different idea.
- We planned to design a jacket that protects refugees from sun heat and the winter cold. The jacket consisted of two sides that have different colors. These colors have faces sign to indicate which side is for heating or cooling. The jacket is made up of cotton and wool material to suitable with the weather change. In the middle between the sides of the jacket, there is a stretching material which flexible with the body of the person.
- The prototype of our jacket was as follow:
The jacket is made up of Nylon. In the back of the jacket there are chips which sensitive to the weather changes. The chips have two colors. In the cold weather the chips change to the red color to warm the wearer. While in the hot weather it changes to the red color to cool the wearer. The main problem that we try to solve with our prototype is to end the suffering of refugees from the weather changes.
(Here we will a draw for the Jacket)
- The biggest struggle of the challenge is to find a solution of the chips which may get affected by lightning. Other thing the nylon material may interact with heating which may cause rash and burns to the wearer. Other negative thing in the first design that we cannot wash it because it has chips that may damaged by water. Other thing the jacket will be expensive since it made up of technical material. Therefore, we decide to use cotton and wool material. Also, we used some symbol to help the wearer to choose the side that they need it. We choose not to use the chips to avoid his damages on the body. Other thing avoiding using technical material will make the product cheaper so everyone can have it.
- The biggest surprise that when we exposed the jacket to high heat the chips start to launch different colors and the nylon starts to melt. Also, we remind that the nylon affect on the body of the person. It lets him to sweep a lot which mean that it is not a good material to use on our product.
- I learnt that when I think to design something I should be creative and realistic. My design should benefit other. It should be in the hand of all people. I learnt of this challenge that I am able to think out of box. I found that I am creative. I think in real way so I keep in my account the advantage and the disadvantage of the product.
- Next time, I will do a survey to collect the views of people to know the positive and the negative of the product. So, I will make change depend on that.
