Non-cognitivism
It will help ensure your grip on non-cognitivism if you can clearly explain why two apparent objections are not good ones. How does the non-cognitivist respond to the following charges?
- Non-cognitivism is self-defeating. It says moral claims are not truth-evaluable, so how can the non-cognitivist say that her theory is true with a straight face?
- Cultural Relativism got in trouble for being unable to account for cross-cultural moral disagreement, but at least they had an account of disagreement within a culture. Non-Cognitivism can’t account for any genuine moral disagreement at all, because having a genuine disagreement requires one party denying just what the other asserts, and if non-cognitivism is true, moral ‘statements’ don’t assert anything at all!
