Scenario: Collaboration between Japanese and Australian business partners.
Background
A (fictional) Australian company XBR Minerals have recently suffered loss of productivity and missed deadlines due to challenges in collaboration between their Japanese and Australian staff. To illustrate the problems of the company, we are using a short excerpt from the 2003 film Japanese Story.(NOTE; THIS ASSIGNMENT IS NOT ABOUT JAPANS CULTURE, ITS MORE GENERAL CULTURAL, YOU DON’T HAVE TO KNOW ABOUT JAPAN CULTURAL)
See the YouTube clip below or click here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIQH_msbZ2o
(This film was directed by Sue Brooks. The two characters are Hiromitsu Tachibana, played by Gotaro Tsunashima and Sandi Edwards, played by Toni Collette).
For the purposes of this task, imagine that Tachibana and Edwards are both employees of XBR Minerals. Edwards is an Australian geologist sent to meet Tachibana, a geologist from XBR Minerals’ joint venture Japanese business partner, at the airport in an isolated desert area. Imagine that this clip is just one example of a wider challenge faced by XBR Minerals in fostering collaboration among their staff.
Your task
You are engaged as a consultant by the company XBR Minerals: they want to better understand the cultural competence issues the company is facing.
To do this, you will need to:
• watch the video clip (imagining it is a re-creation of what actually happened),
• work through the module contents and activities, including Discussion Activity 1 (see below)
• use concepts covered in XBR104 and the cultural competence literature to reflect on the cultural competence issues depicted.
• produce a report which presents your analysis of the cultural competence issues raised, and uses academic literature and XBR104 content to discuss the perceived problems.
• make sure you address the assessment criteria (see the Task 1 rubric below)
