Tanglewood case 7
2. Develop assessment scores based on several multiple predictor methods described in your book. This entails developing distinct scores for each applicant based on clinical prediction, unit weighting, and rational weighting schemes. For each method, develop a list of your top three finalists to provide to the regional manager. Compare these to a multiple hurdle selection procedure that uses test scores as a first stage to find the five strongest candidates, and then uses interviews and résumés to select the top three finalists. Which of the methods do you believe works best? Why?
4. Based on the three previous portions of the assignment, develop an official guide to selection that can be supplied to all the stores. This official guide should provide the information from the selection plan, suggestions for how to combine predictors, and guidelines for managers on who should be involved in the final decision. The decision makers do not necessarily need to be the same ones participating in the selection decision for the Spokane flagship store.
You will develop a compensatory model using the three methods given in the case for all 10 applicants. (Appendix D) In other words use all their scores even for the Clinical Prediction. (You are not limited to those scores – but you must apply the same criteria, whatever you decide to use, across the board to everyone for the Clinical Prediction). I expect to see all the scores and not just the totals – showing how you arrived at the total scores for each candidate. Then do the Unit weighting. Then complete Rational Weighting – again for all ten candidates. (Show the weight for each predictor on all candidates.) In the Multiple Hurdles again show all scores for each candidate while demonstrating how you used the cut scores (Corporate Average). You can cross through or highlight those who drop from left to right. These are some of the factors you will need then to arrive at your final 5. Then using resumes/interviews (show your work) recommend your top Three finalists.
Keep in mind that you are doing an Official Guide for Selection for all the stores – Make this a meaningful contribution to the store and a useful tool for the hiring managers. What predictors will be used and how will those be processed. (See example in Exhibit 11-4 in the text. Which method will you recommend be used at T-W. Think about the time and costs of involving a large number of participants in the final selection decision process. This is admittedly an important position, so think carefully who should be involved in making the final selection!
This Guide should be the culmination of all you studied regarding the selection process. You do not have to show how to do each step along the way but you should refer to it and provide guidance as to what predictors will be used and how they will be processed to arrive at the top candidates. This question involves formatting the information from this and previous casework into a single document that can be disseminated for the purpose of guiding managers on how to implement the new system you have provided to Tanglewood.
