Tessa Morris-Suzuki’s Reinventing Japan
Reaction paper guideline:
The purposes of writing papers are
1) to engage yourself in assigned reading materials;
2) to think actively and critically about texts in relation to historical contexts;
3) to reflect on and articulate your own thoughts in the writing process. The details of each review essay are as follows:
A reaction papers (max 500 words single-spaced):
Students will read Tessa Morris-Suzuki’s Reinventing Japan Chapter 4,5,7,9.
In a reaction paper to Reinventing Japan, students should discuss the book by giving a critique (not necessarily criticism) on the author’s argument(s) and articulating one’s own ideas on a given topic. A rubric for assessment will be provided separately.

2. Video Conference Chat
During the first week of the term, you should have signed up for two small group Google Hangout Sessions. In these sessions 4 to 6 students will meet with me on Google Hangout for 30 minutes. You can check your time and/or sign up for your desired day and time by clicking the People tab above, followed by Groups.

These sessions are meant to be informal but you should come prepared with the week’s assigned readings and videos, and part of the grade will be based on participation and understanding of the topics.
In week 4 we cover chapter 7 and the Affective Events Theory (AET). This theory explains the way emotions impact our behavior at work and how, over time, repeated emotions (e.g., happiness or anger) influence our job attitudes and performance.

Read the section on causes of stress at work in chapter 7 (pgs. 212-218)
And be prepared to discuss the following:
Describe one workplace stressors (cause of stress) that resonates with you.
Do you have a personal strategy in dealing with this stressor?
A brief summary of the TED Talk.
What stood out to you and how would you apply this to your own work life?
Describe emotional intelligence and at least one of the emotional intelligence competencies described in the article.
Do you think happiness matters for the workplace? Why or why not?
