Background/
Significance Review the literature; include at least two peer-reviewed nursing or public health journal articles to support statements. Include why the population is considered vulnerable and what factors contribute to the population’s risk overall. |
13-15 points
Clearly demonstrates an understanding of the literature of the specific vulnerable population. Two articles from appropriate journals cited to support statements. Both why the population is considered vulnerable and the factors which contributed to this population’s vulnerability overall included. |
9-12 points
Limited discussion of background and significance, or some aspects unclear. Missing peer-reviewed journal article. Missing one key aspect (why or what factors make this population vulnerable). |
0 -8 points
Background and significance not articulated, no article citations to support statements, and no mention of why or what factors make this population vulnerable. |
|
Health Status
Address the morbidity and mortality concerns of the population. Include incidence and prevalence data of the primary diseases impacting the population. Address what factors contribute to these health risks and what are the common health challenges of individuals within the group. |
17-20 points
Differentiates and applies the mortality/ morbidity and incidence prevalence data of at least 2-3 primary diseases impacting the population. Synthesizes the health challenges of the population and demonstrates application of factors which lead to health risks in the population. |
10-16 points
Missing one or two aspects of either: morbidity/mortality data, incidence and prevalence information, factors contributing to health risks, or health challenges of the population. Description but no synthesis or application of information. |
0-9 points
Missing multiple components as listed, incomplete or vague language. |
|
Health Disparities
Clearly express the health disparities affecting the population. How does COVID-19 impact this community specifically? Include scholarly references to support statements. |
13-15 points
Identifies and analyzes at least two disparities of the population, and supplements points with at least one peer reviewed source. |
10-12 points
Limited discussion or only one health disparity included. No interpretation of this information. |
0-9 points
Does not address any disparities nor any supportive documentation from references. |
|
Factors Contributing to Population’s Vulnerability
Synthesize the social, financial, and/or psychological factors different from the general population which impact this group. Identify and discuss factors that place individuals in this population at risk for being marginalized by society, public policy, and the health care system. |
17-20 points
Identifies and interprets at least three characteristics which make the population vulnerable such as financial, social or psychologic aspects of this population; differentiates these factors from those of the general population. Examines at least two ways in which society, policies, and health care maintain this population’s vulnerability (or put them at risk for marginalization). |
10-16 points
Limited identification of factors contributing to vulnerability. Provides only one or two factors contributing to vulnerability, and only identifies one way the population remains marginalized. |
0-9 points
Does not address social, financial, or psychological factors marginalizing the population. Does not address how the systems in place maintain the population’s vulnerability.

Significance for Nursing
Address the responsibilities of the nurse. Include strategies the nurse may use to analyze the needs of the population, how the nurse may advocate for the group, how the nurse may impact public policy and/or work to improve health outcomes. |
13-15 points
Evaluates the obligations of the nurse to this vulnerable population. Selects and analyzes at least three various approaches the nurse may employ to improve the health of this population (i.e., advocacy, politics, assessment, education, health promotion). |
10-12 points
Does not address the responsibilities of the nurse clearly; may identify but does not apply how the nurse may effect change. Addresses only one or two methods the nurse could use to improve health. |
0-9 points
Does not address the role of the nurse. |
