Assignment title Managing Human Resources in Health and Social Care
Purpose of this assignment
The following tasks have been designed to guide your work and provide you with opportunities to provide evidence that demonstrates your understanding processes involved in the recruitment, management and development of people in the health and social care workplace.
Each task is different and is set within the specific context of the Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, meaning that you will need to investigate the context carefully.. It is important to place your work in the context of health and social care practice therefore examples will be required to support your discussion linked with appropriate theory. The work you present for assessment must be your own and all sources of information used need to be cited in the text and in a reference list using the Harvard Referencing System
You will need to investigate the processes involved in the management of individuals in the health and social care workplace. This not only includes the recruitment of the most appropriate personnel but importantly the support of employees in carrying out their work effectively in teams and developing their knowledge and skills so that they can contribute to the delivery of a quality service. You will contextualise these elements within the relevant legal and policy frameworks. In addition, you will need to explore the influence of management style and organisational factors on the effectiveness of teams.
Scenario
Failure by the National Health Service to employ sufficient staff on hospital wards means that patient safety remains in jeopardy. One of the HospitalNegligence.co.uk team of specialist lawyers has claimed that there is a potential for more people to be affected by healthcare mistakes if the NHS is unable to find a final resolution to the problem.
According to one press report, more than four-fifths of NHS acute trusts were unable to meet their own planned staffing levels in April despite a record-breaking recruitment drive last year. An exclusive story published by the Health Service Journal quoted figures from the NHS Choices website which suggested that 90 per cent of trusts missed targets for the number of nurses working during the day – a four per cent increase on the quota in 2014. Seventy per cent of trusts also admitted not having enough nurses available to work night shifts.
The story has prompted the Department of Health to stress that it remains “fully committed to making more staff available”, adding that the Chief Inspector of Hospitals would “step in and take action” to ensure safe care if hospitals weren’t able to do it themselves.
However, the Royal College of Nursing claims that the staffing crisis could be made even worse by plans to force non-EU nurses to leave by next if they earn less than £35,000 a year.
Olivia Scates, one of the HospitalNegligence.co.uk team, described how the problems created by staffing issues represented a common theme in many of the cases which she and her colleagues handled.
“These latest admissions about poor staffing made by NHS trusts is extremely worrying.
“Patients expect that when they need the NHS, there are adequate numbers of individuals able to provide the treatment required.
“The failure to have a full staffing complement can not only mean people having to wait longer than they should to be treated but can lead to available doctors and nurses working longer hours and making mistakes.
“It is disappointing that the shortfall is still a concern several years after staffing problems were found to be one of the reasons behind the deaths of hundreds of patients at the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust.
“The findings of research into what is considered to be safe staffing, ordered by an inquiry into the Mid-Staffs scandal, are due to be published in the coming weeks.
“That report promises to be something which the NHS and patients alike will examine carefully. If its observations are not adhered to, I fear that we will see more cases similar to those that we have already dealt with involving the consequences of poorly-resourced healthcare.”

Plagiarism Rules and Regulations
• No plagiarism is accepted in assignments and students are advised to do the referencing correctly according to the Harvard Referencing System.
• Students are advised to submit assignments with a similarity in below 10%. Any student submitting an assignment with a percentage of more than 20% will fail and get an official academic warning.
• Reduce your plagiarism by not sharing assignments and doing in text citations of sources used, using the Harvard referencing method
What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is the software that EThames uses to calculate the similarity of your assignment to any other document submitted in the same system all over the world.
What happens when you submit an assignment on Turnitin?
You submit your assignment on Turnitin by submitting it on Livecampus on the assignment submission link. Your assignment is then compared with all of the assignments for all the different units submitted on Livecampus as well as assignments submitted by other students in other colleges and books and documents all over the world. The report generated is not the final report. The final report will only be generated after the final deadline which would mean that once the submission link closes and once every student submitted assignments at EThames for the specific unit, only then the final report will be generated. This means that if you have shared your assignment with anybody and they have submitted part of it or the full assignment the initial report your friend got would’ve indicated the similarity, but your report would’ve remained unchanged. This is because the report is refreshed every time that you upload your assignment and then finally after the deadline. After the deadline their plagiarism will be high as well as your own.
What can you do to avoid getting a high Turnitin score?
• Do not copy pieces of work from any book or website. It needs to be rewritten in your own words and proper in text citation should be done according to the Harvard referencing method
• Do not share your assignment with any friend, not even to assist them
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is passing off the work of others as your own. This constitutes academic theft and is a serious matter which is penalised in assignment marking.
Plagiarism is the submission of an item of assessment containing elements of work produced by another person(s) in such a way that it could be assumed to be the student’s own work. Examples of plagiarism are:
• The verbatim copying of another person’s work without acknowledgement
• The close paraphrasing of another person’s work by simply changing a few words or altering the order of presentation without acknowledgement
• The unacknowledged quotation of phrases from another person’s work and/or the presentation of another person’s idea(s) as one’s own.
Copying or close paraphrasing with occasional acknowledgement of the source may also be deemed to be plagiarism if the absence of quotation marks implies that the phraseology is the student’s own.
Plagiarised work may belong to another student or be from a published source such as a book, report, journal or material available on the internet.
