Everyday Life – Autumn 2017
Assessment 2 – Exercise 3
Response to questions based on unit material (lectures and readings) – 400 words.
Question 1
‘It is one of the most fundamental paradoxes of our social life that when we are at our most natural, our most everyday, we are also at our most cultural; that when we are in roles that look the most obvious and given, we are actually in roles that are constructed, learned and far from inevitable’ (Willis, 1979:184).
How do Willis’ quote (above), and the concept of socialisation, help us to understand gender roles relating to the preparation of food?
Question 2 Use the concepts of social constructionism and ideology, to explore the meanings and values associated with work in contemporary Everyday Life.
Instructions:
- You must answer both questions.
- Your total answer must be 400 words in length. Each question will be marked separately and each question is equal in marks, so you should devote approximately 200 words to each question.
- No additional research is required – you should refer only to relevant essential readings and lectures.
- All answers must be expressed ENTIRELY in your own words. Theorists/authors should be acknowledged (ie Germov and Poole argue that ….’) but do not use direct quotes or close paraphrasing from either the readings or the lectures. You must express your ideas in your own words in order to demonstrate your understanding of the material. This is not a suggestion – it is a requirement.
- Double space answer.
- Do not cut and paste or retype the questions into your answer. Simply label them Q1 and Q2.
